Kaitlyn Monica Ferruggia is a Chicago based multimedia artist. She grew up in the suburbs of New Jersey, graduated from Raritan Valley Community College with an Associates Degree in Visual Arts. She will graduate with a BFA with a focus on ceramics and print media from the School of the Art Institute of Chicago in the spring of 2019. 

STATEMENT OF INTENT 

I am inspired by the spirit and core values of countercultures, with particular fondness for the beatniks of the ‘50s and the hippies of the ‘60s. I am interested in the art that these countercultures produced. I am influenced by the art nouveau and psychedelic art movements, comedy, and Americana. In my recent work I have been exploring themes of ownership over seemingly intangible properties, currently music, focusing on the Grateful Dead. My work includes questions of ownership, themes of idolization, commodification, and objectification. My work floats between the dichotomy between high art / concept based ceramics and functional ware / decorative arts. I work with clay, print media, and digital media. Within ceramics, I am developing a cohesive set of functional ware that speaks to the nature of the Deadhead community. Within print media, I am developing a series of comics, titled “My Boyfriend Wont Let Me Listen To The Dead”.
